FAQs

I'm a student. Can I volunteer as a listener?

If you will be in Cambridge for at least 12 months from the start of training, by all means. If you will be out of Cambridge for the holidays, or going away for a year abroad/fieldwork trip, please let us know on your form so that we can manage our volunteer numbers.

What's your equal opportunities policy?

We believe that the more diverse our volunteer body is, the more capable it is, and the more able we are to support helpline callers from a variety of backgrounds and with a variety of experience. We welcome applications from women from minority ethnic groups, disabled women, lesbian, bisexual and trans women, and women of all faiths and ages. Unfortunately we are not able to engage deaf volunteers on the helpline, since we cannot run a text phone service.

I want to volunteer, but I'm not sure I'll be able to handle it. Should I apply?

We have a support system of debriefing and supervision which helps volunteers with the emotional side of the work. If after reading the application pack you still aren't sure whether to apply, you can speak to the Volunteer Co-ordinator who will try to answer any questions you may have.

What if I'm a survivor?

We trust your judgement as to whether you would be able to take calls without it being a problem for your emotional well-being. If you would like to discuss this with our Volunteer Co-ordinator, this will be kept completely confidential.

I don't identify as feminist. Will you accept my application?

Yes, of course! Being a feminist is not a requirement. Have a look at our principles, and the myths and facts page – volunteers should be happy with these, since they form the basis of our approach to the work.

I'm a man. Where can I volunteer?

There are local listening services such as the Samaritans who would be glad of you time, and national men's organisations that you might be able to help.
